Lay-offs: Lloyds said some branch staff losing their jobs will be able to move into the new roles
Lloyds Banking Group is to axe 1,600 jobs across its branch network as it reshapes its business towards online banking.
In a move set to enrage the many who value face-to-face service, it claimed changes will enable customers to ‘see us how and when they want to’.
Lloyds is creating 830 roles in a ‘relationship growth’ team so staff can see customers more quickly in branches, through video meetings, or over the phone without waiting for appointments.
The company, which includes Lloyds Bank, Halifax and Bank of Scotland, said some branch staff losing their jobs will be able to move into the new roles or to a different part of the business.
The lender said it reflected changes to the way people bank, with 21m now online and just 8 per cent using a branch exclusively.
It said: ‘As more choose to manage banking online, it’s important our people are available when it matters most.’
The job cuts are not linked to any branch closures. But they are likely to be seen as a further hollowing out of high streets where big banks have been retrenching.
Lloyds, on the latest count, was on course to shut at least 275 branches in 2023 and 2024. Across banks and building societies, more than 5,800 branches have shut since 2015, according to consumer group Which?
A separate report from Which? this week said 3m people will live in a constituency without a bank branch by the end of the year. Campaigners worry that elderly and vulnerable customers are worst-hit.
