Dési Bouterse was sentenced last month to 20 years for the 1982 killings of political opponents, but had not appeared by late Friday

Suriname’s former dictator Dési Bouterse, who was sentenced to 20 years in prison last month for the 1982 killings of more than a dozen political opponents, has gone missing after failing to turn himself in to authorities.

His wife, Ingrid Bouterse-Waldring, told reporters on Friday that she did not know where he was and firmly stated: “He’s not going to jail!”
