The central pot of money has come from Government and is apportioned across councils in England.

They are then allocating their share to residents in need, in most cases those on a low income or benefits.

That means what you can get is a bit of a postcode lottery, but it’s worth seeing if you are entitled to help.

You can do this by getting in touch with your local authority.

If you don’t know what council area you fall under, you can use the Government’s council locator tool on its website – you just have to enter your postcode.

In Dorset, the council is offering thousands of residents supermarket vouchers worth £150 who are feeling the pinch of the cost of living.

The vouchers are being distributed by the Dorset Citizens Advice branch but you can also apply via the Dorset Council website.

Applications will open at 10am on Wednesday 3 January 2024 for low-income households in the Dorset Council area.

Dorset Council households will be eligible for the grant if they have:

  • an annual household net income of less than £30,000 and
  • savings of less than £16,000 and
  • not applied for a previous HSF payment within the last 6 months

Cllr Laura Beddow, Dorset Council Portfolio Holder for Culture, Communities and Customer Services said:

“Christmas can be an expensive time for all of us and it’s important to try and start the new year off well. If you are currently struggling with the cost of living challenge, this initiative may help you as it offers supermarket vouchers to help with essentials.

“If you are applying in this window, please make sure you have not applied for a previous HSF payment since July 2023 as further vouchers cannot be issued and there are a very limited number of applications available for this window.

“If you do miss out on this window, another will open on Tuesday 6 February 2024 at 10am.”
