PLAYSTATION faces a massive lawsuit over the price of games on the PlayStation Store.

The massive court case could be a win for PlayStation owners, and could even lead to lower game prices in the future.

Those who purchased a PlayStation game before 2022 could be liable for compensation.

In 2022, a lawsuit set up on behalf of UK PlayStation owners hoped to gain compensation from Sony due to the apparent over-inflation of prices on the PlayStation Store.

The suit claims that thanks to Sony’s dominance in the industry, it has been able to secure a number of exclusive games for PlayStation.

As PlayStation is the only storefront selling these games, the suit asserts that Sony artificially inflated the price.

Sony’s lawyers claim the case was “flawed from start to finish”, but the Competition Appeal Tribunal has now allowed the case to go ahead.

The lawsuit was originally filed for £5billion ($6.5billion), but has now been inflated to £6.3billion ($8billion).

If Sony loses the court case, then everyone who made purchases via the PlayStation Store before the lawsuit was filed in 2022, would be liable for compensation.

Sony lost a similar lawsuit back in 2015, over advertising that claimed the PlayStation Vita would be able to play PS3 games via remote play.

The feature wasn’t fully implemented until the PS4 was released, which would have required players to purchase the new console.

Sony was forced to offer PS Vita owners compensation, which came in the form of either a $25 check, $25 in store credit, or a selection of game bundles.

If this lawsuit is successful then similar compensation will likely be offered. However, there is a more interesting outcome that could occur from the lawsuit.

A success here could mean that PlayStation could be forced to reduce the price of its exclusive games on the PS Store in the future.
