Most recently, experts have uncovered scammers pretending to be a video game stop called Retro Gaming of Denver, located in Denver, Colorado.

Using fake advertisements, the scammers have been claiming that the store is closing down and hosting a goodbye sale.

The adverts are being shared on Facebook and purporting to offer deals on both games and consoles.

However, when users click on the ads, they are led to a fake Retro Gaming of Denver website dubbed AllModern-Sale.com, Trend Micro reported.

This will eventually redirect you to a fake website called retrogamingofdenver-sale.com.

The scammers claim to be offering discounts on Nintendo, Xbox, and PlayStation consoles “at virtually free prices.”

HOW TO SPOT A SCAM

One of the first signs an advert is a scam is if the deal seems unbelievable – if it’s too good to be true, it probably is.

You can also check a page’s credibility on anti-scam websites, such as  ScamAdviser.

The service awarded retrogamingofdenver-sale.com a Trustscore rating of just 2 out of 100.

ScamAdviser also reveals that the website was created just 10 days ago – a huge red flag.

HOW TO STAY SAFE

Experts have shared some tips to help users protect themselves from this type of attack.

The first is to be wary of clicking on links in ads, especially those that seem suspicious from the jump.

You should always make sure your computer is running up-to-date security software.

Be careful about the websites you visit and the files you download.

Change your passwords regularly and use strong passwords that are difficult to guess.
