Blow to hard-pressed Brits as council tax could soar by as much as £120 a year

COUNCIL tax could increase by as much as £120 a year.

Under new plans drawn up by the Treasury, local authorities may be able to put up bills by a maximum of 5% next year, The Telegraph reports.

It would mean average family homeowners in Band D could be charged more than £2,000 in council tax from April.

Rutland Council charges Band D households £2,365.56 – the highest amount in the country.

If they put up their bills by 5% the total would go up to £2,486.21 – an increase of more than £120.

Other areas will see their bills increase by £100 or £110.

Inflation is expected to fall but currently stands at 4.6%, meaning the rises are likely to exceed inflation.

Local authorities will not decide until the new year by how much they will increase council tax.
