More than half of UK adults struggle to keep track of subscription fees and find costs are harder to cope with alongside cost-of-living pressures, a report shows.

Subscription services for entertainment, books and magazines let customers spread costs.

But households are losing sight of monthly outgoings in a worrying trend dubbed ‘subscription creep’, according to debt collection company Intrum.

Almost half of consumers in 20 European countries are not on top of their subscription fees.

Only three countries surveyed — Greece, Ireland and Finland — fare worse than the UK.

Younger adults are most likely to be overwhelmed, with 69 per cent of UK Millennials (born 1980 to 1996) struggling to keep track of subscription spending, followed by 68 per cent of Gen Z (1997 to 2012) who are troubled by the costs.

That compares to just 31 per cent of Baby Boomers (1946 to 1964) troubled by mounting subscription fees, according to the report.

Andrés Rubio, of Intrum, says: ‘Keeping track of your recurring subscription costs, payment deferrals and all debts is increasingly complex but essential.

‘Flexible payment terms are clearly attractive to consumers, but using these responsibly is the key to long-term, sustainable spending patterns.’
