Mould thrives in moist, warm environments, and colder months bring humidity and higher temperatures inside our homes due to heating.

Dehumidifiers can be a costly solution and an eyesore in some cases.

But a £5 plant offered at DIY retail chain Homebase has been hailed for not only preventing mould, but also adding a spark to interiors.

And it also doesn’t add to energy bills while costing close to nothing.

English Ivy, also known as Hedera Helix, is an effective mould remover.

It’s not a fussy plant, thriving even in a little shade, which can be perfect for bathrooms with little sunlight.

It’s often available in large sizes and is among easiest plants to keep, while thought to filter 78 per cent of airborne mould in 12 hours.

The plant removes mould spores from the air before they get a chance to settle and grow on your walls and furnishings.

Yet there is a downside – potential buyers have been warned the ivy leaves can be toxic to animals.

Pet-owners are advised to hang English Ivy so it trails from hanging baskets well away from any animals’ reach.

The hanging basket can also be useful to save counter space if kitchen size is restricted.

While the plant loves humidity and is best when kept damp at all times, it’s also important not to overwater it.

You can get this easy fix for mould problems at Homebase, with two for just £10.
