VODAFONE has urged homeowners to make one simple Wi-Fi router check to make sure they’re getting the speeds they pay for.

Think back to when you received your current router.

If it was within the last year – or even two years – then chances are you’re in the clear.

But according to Vodafone, your router should be replaced every three years or so.

Speaking to The Sun, a Vodafone spokesperson said: “As a general rule, every few years is recommended, as the latest devices have the best Wi-Fi standards, can connect more devices and offer the best security.

“That being said, every household has different needs so it should also be about the needs of each local network.”

There’s a host of things that can be interfering with your Wi-Fi speeds.

It could be the fact that you’ve placed the router behind or inside a large bit of furniture, or very low down to the ground, or nearby any known signals blockers like TVs, microwaves or mirrors.

But if you think your placement isn’t to blame, then it could be your ageing router.

Your internet needs may have changed, too.

In which case, a router upgrade might be just what you need.

The spokesperson added: “Things to consider include the number of devices that are usually connected and what the internet is used for, i.e. gaming, streaming or just browsing.

“As the number of devices connected and how they use the internet will impact the type of router needed.”

Most internet providers will upgrade your router free of charge when it’s time – or if they’re rolling out a customer-wide upgrade.

Although, if a sparkly new router requires you to change network packages, then it may cost money to upgrade.
