Most people who have student loans to pay back get their payments automatically deducted from their wages each month.

Yet the Money Saving Expert (MSE) website has revealed that over 100,000 people have unclaimed money on their loans that they could be getting back.

In the last tax year alone, over one million graduates overpaid their student loans, according to an Freedom of Information request made by MSE.

Here’s how to check if you’re owed money in just a few minutes.

The first thing to do is check your account by going to the gov.uk website.

If you’ve got money left to pay it’ll tell you but it will also show if you’re owed anything when you check your balance.

If you’ve checked and are due money back, call the Student Loans Company on 0300 100 0611 and they’ll give you a hand.

Simply explain what you’re owed and the refund process will be underway.

No matter when you finished university you can still claim as far back as you need to.

Martin Lewis made a more in-depth guide on YouTube earlier this year to help anyone struggling.

Francesca was one of these who got back £2,000 in overpaid student loans thanks to Lewis and MSE.

She claimed the huge refund after seeing the student loan overpayments video.

The lucky lady said: “I want to say the biggest thank you for your student loan overpayment coverage.

“I’ve been refunded over £2,000 at a time in my life where both myself and my partner have wound up unemployed and we’re really struggling.

“Keep fighting the good fight and thanks so much.”

Earlier this year, university student debt stood at a whopping £182billion — with some owing almost £200,000 each.

Of the 4.7million past and present students having to pay back loans, 20,000 owe more than £100,000 — up from 6,000 a year ago.

This came weeks after anyone over the age of 55 was told they could be owed up to £3,252 from the government.

That’s because people accessing their retirement savings from this age could be overpaying tax.

Meanwhile, Martin Lewis’ MSE has revealed how to track down lost cash with “little effort” after a woman reclaimed £13,500.

Plus, nearly half a million retirees will face a surprise tax bill because of a bumper state pension payment rise.
