Some people love to listen to music, a podcast, or an audio track of relaxing noise like rainfall or a babbling brook.

This can make it easier to nod off.

But you then have the problem of the audio playing all night long.

This could wake you later on, especially if the music switches to something less relaxing.

And if you’re listening to a podcast, you might find that you end up burning through episodes in the night that you won’t hear because you’re asleep.

All the while, your iPhone battery is being discharged to play the music.

Thankfully there’s a way to use your Clock app on iPhone to prevent this from happening.

How to use the Clock app Sleep Timer on iPhone

Go to the Clock app and select the Timers tab.

Now look at the options for creating a Timer, which should include Label.

A second option should say When Timer Ends – tap it.

Now scroll all the way to the bottom and select Stop Playing.

Tap Set in the top-right corner then create a timer of your chosen length.

This will stop all media from playing after the chosen amount of time.

And don’t worry about an “alarm” going off and waking you up: by choosing Stop Playing, you turn off the normal timer buzzer.

This will work on multiple apps, including Apple Music and Spotify.

Podcast trick

You can also set this process up very easily inside the Podcasts app.

If you’re listening to a Podcast, go to the Now Playing screen.

Then tap on the crescent moon icon to reveal a pop-up menu.

There you’ll be able to choose from a selection of times:

  • 1 hour
  • 45 minutes
  • 30 minutes
  • 15 minutes
  • 10 minutes
  • 5 minutes

But perhaps the most useful option is When Current Episode Ends, which will simply shut off the podcast once your chosen episode is over.

This is easier than doing the Timer trick and is much more useful for podcasts specifically.
