Thousands of users hit by Tesco outage

Thousands of Tesco customers have been left furious this morning after Tesco’s app and website suffered an outage.

According to DownDetector, over 700 users have already reported issues with the site.

‘This app is my lifeline’

One customer has taken to Downdetector to vent about the Tesco outage: “I had almost finished my shop and was lucky enough to get a slot for tomorrow morning.”

“As soon as I went to pay, the app went down and wouldn’t load.”

The shopper continued: “I tried signing out and in again but it wouldn’t even log me back in.”

“Now my slot has expired, so I may have to wait until next week to get another slot.”

“I’m disabled, so this app is my lifeline to getting shopping.”

The origins of Tesco

Tesco was started in 1919 by Jack Cohen, the son of Jewish immigrants from Poland, who began selling war surplus groceries from a booth at Well Street Market in Hackney, in London’s East End.

The Tesco brand debuted in 1924.

After purchasing a supply of tea from Thomas Edward Stockwell, Jack Cohen coined the phrase.

He created new labels by combining the supplier’s initials (TES) with the first two letters of his surname (CO), making the phrase TESCO.

Jack Cohen founded the first Tesco store in September 1931 at 54 Watling Street, Burnt Oak, Edgware, Middlesex, after experimenting with his first permanent indoor market stand in Tooting in November 1930.

Tesco has greatly expanded

Tesco has been expanding worldwide since the early 1990s, having operations in 11 additional nations.

The company left the United States in 2013, although it is still expanding internationally as of 2018.

Tesco has expanded into industries such as retailing books, clothes, electronics, furniture, toys, gasoline, software, financial services, telecommunications, and internet services since the 1960s.

Tesco repositioned itself as a downmarket high-volume low-cost retailer in the 1990s, seeking to appeal to a wide variety of socioeconomic classes with its low-cost “Tesco Value” line and premium “Tesco Finest” range.

Tesco comments on issues

A Tesco spokesperson has told The US Sun: “We’re aware of a technical issue that has impacted some customers using our website and app this evening.

“We’re sorry for any inconvenience this has caused and we are working to resolve the issue.”

Reports go down

Reports have started to drop on Downdetector.

However, they still remain over 1,700 and the issue has yet to be resolved.
