This is something WhatsApp does periodically as it updates its features and interface system.

“To choose what to stop supporting, every year we, like other technology companies, look at which devices and software are the oldest and have the fewest number of people still using them,” WhatsApp explained.

“These devices also might not have the latest security updates or might lack the functionality required to run WhatsApp,” it added.

Specifically, WhatsApp will stop support for Android 5.0 and older versions starting on October 24.

It’s important to note that this change will affect any Android device still running version 5.0 Lollipop or older – and not just Samsung phones.

Some popular models include the Galaxy S4 and Galaxy Note 3.

Meanwhile, models like the Galaxy S5 and Galaxy Note 4 are safe, for now.

WhatsApp said that before they stop supporting an operating system, they notify users directly in WhatsApp.

The company also reminds users a few times to upgrade before the change takes place.

Currently, WhatsApp provides support to Android running OS 4.1 and newer, iPhones running iOS 12 and newer, and KaiOS 2.5.0 and newer.

HOW TO FIND OUT

To find out if WhatsApp will stop working on your device, you need to know your operating system version.

First, you have to head into your Android phone’s Settings.

From there, scroll down to About phone and tap on Software information.
