WEB surfers are making a risky mistake that may be putting slowing down their internet connection, according to an expert from Sky.

As the weather turns, nights draw in and the Wi-Fi gets a little busier in the evenings, it’s important homeowners give their router some TLC for the best speeds.

The internet naturally gets busier as the weather gets colder as people spend less time outside.

This means more time scrolling, gaming or flicking a movie on as it gets dark increasingly earlier.

To help loosen up those signals for a smooth connection, Aman Bhatti, Director of Propositions at Sky Broadband, told The Sun to always keep your router on.

“To ensure your WiFi is always optimised it also helps if you can leave your router on continuously,” he said.

“Particularly in the early hours of the morning, as this is when software updates are usually provided.”

Software updates improve router security, and also patch up any bugs that had been found or exploited by hackers.

If the router is not regularly updated, it may succumb to a cyberattack or even shutdown.

While there’s certainly a chill in the air, your Wi-Fi will be largely unaffected – until, perhaps, a storm comes along.

“Overall, cold weather shouldn’t impact your Wi-Fi signal too much, but much like everything else, it still needs care and attention,” Bhatti explained..

“For instance, it is worth running a semi-regular speed test, to make sure you’re getting the speeds you expect.

“And if not, there are simple ways to help such as making sure your Wi-Fi hub is in a central location so that your main devices are as close as possible.”

A monthly speed test can help patch up any so-called darkspots – where Wi-Fi is spotty or worse, non-existent.

If there are patchy corners, where Wi-Fi is particularly slow, then make sure your router is in the centre of all your connection devices.
