Security experts have revealed how a “common” habit could see your iPhone or Android hacked.

It’s all linked to how regularly you update your devices.

Many people forget that software updates aren’t just about unlocking new features.

They also close dangerous security holes that can be exploited by criminals to steal your info or money.

“Computer and device updates are a vital way of keeping systems secure,” explained Phil Muncaster, an IT expert writing for cybersecurity firm ESET.

“That’s because they’re the manufacturer’s way of delivering the most up-to-date software possible.

“Sometimes they’re issued to fix a specific vulnerability which hackers are taking advantage of in real time to hijack devices and accounts.

“It pays to have automatic updates switched on for all software, browsers and operating systems.”

Muncaster urged users not to skip software updates.

It might sometimes seem like a lot of effort, but updating your devices could save you from a devastating cyberattack.

How to update your iPhone

Updating your iPhone is extremely easy.

Just go into Settings > General > Software Update and install any pending updates.

You should also consider turning on Automatic Updates so you don’t need to constantly check for new versions of iOS.

If your iPhone no longer receives updates, that’s a big issue.

That means your device is so old that Apple is no longer protecting it with software updates.

And crooks could take advantage of this.

If you’re using an older device, consider upgrading to a newer model sooner rather than later.

How to update your Android

It’s also similarly simple to update an Android phone, although the path through settings may vary slightly depending on your model.

Typically you would be able to check your Android version by going into Settings > About Phone > Android Version.

And if you wanted to update, just go to Settings > System > System Update.

Android phones work slightly differently from iPhones in that updates don’t become available for all models at the same time.

For instance, Samsung and Sony phones might get updates at different times.

And Google Pixel phones will typically get core Android updates first.

Consider installing updates as soon as they arrive for maximum security.
