A HIGH street chain is to replace one of the 26 coffee shops located in Tesco that is due to close.

Harris + Hoole is closing 26 of its franchises inside the supermarket but one is already set to be taken over by Costa.

The popular coffee chain which is owned by Caffè Nero announced the closures earlier this month.

One of the first locations to close was its site at the Tesco Extra Crooksfoot store in Ashford.

Announcing the news on social media the management team said it was closing “earlier than expected”.

However, all is not lost for Ashford customers who like to get their coffee fix from this location as Costa will be taking on the site.

A spokesperson for Costa said: “We can confirm that a new Costa Coffee store will open in Crooksfoot’s Tesco Extra Supermarket, Ashford, later this year.

“We look forward to welcoming customers into our new store.”

It is understood that Harris + Hoole’s stand-alone locations will remain open and the company will continue to open more stores.

Speaking about the closures a spokesperson for Harris + Hoole said: “Harris + Hoole has a strong store opening and growth plan for 2023 and beyond, focused on standalone stores in locations which best appeal to our target customer market.

“Following the conclusion of our existing agreement with Tesco, both parties have decided to pursue separate strategies.

“The first of our new stores has already opened, with several more in the pipeline.

“We’re grateful for our partnership with Tesco and wish them well for the future.”

  • Ashford – to be taken over by Costa
  • Addlestone
  • Broadstairs
  • Bar Hill
  • Buckingham
  • Burgess Hill
  • Colchester
  • Chichester Tesco
  • Cheshunt
  • Guildford Superstore
  • Hatfield
  • Horley
  • Horsham
  • Huntingdon
  • New Malden
  • Romford
  • Tooley Street
  • Watford

These locations will be closing next year:

  • Havant
  • Shoreham
  • Sunbury
  • Kensington
  • Brooklands
  • Hemel
  • Southend

The following branches will remain open:

  • Amersham
  • Chichester South Street
  • Crouch End
  • East Sheen
  • Farnham
  • Fleet Street
  • Guildford North Street
  • Harpenden
  • Henley
  • Imperial Wharf
  • Mortimer Street
  • New Cavendish Street
  • St Margaret’s
  • Stansted Airport
  • Twickenham
  • Uxbridge

The popular coffee chain has been in Tescos since 2012 and was sold to Caffè Nero in 2016.

The closure of Harris + Hoole has left some coffee fans reeling as one loyal customer on social media said: “Gutted. So much better coffee than all the other chains. What a shame!”

Costa has also had its fair share of closures and has so far closed down seven sites this year.
