Thankfully, there are many tools at users’ disposal to enhance Wi-Fi speed.

One of the best (and easiest) ways to smooth your connection, according to High-Speed Internet’s blog, is to turn everything on and off.

RESTART YOUR MODEM

The first thing you want to do is unplug your modem or wireless gateway.

Next, wait for around 30 seconds and then plug it back in.

“This process allows the modem to clear out any glitches,” High-Speed Internet writes.

“Your modem translates internet signals between your home network and your internet provider,” the blog continued.

Typically, if your internet is lagging, a power cycle is the best place to start troubleshooting.

You will also want to follow this process with your router.

RESTART YOUR ROUTER

This is only necessary if you have a standalone wireless router.

“Like with the modem, a power cycle clears your router’s memory and gives it a fresh start on tasks that were bogging it down before,” High-Speed Internet writes.

Like before, unplug your router, wait 30 seconds, and then power it back on.

Finally, turn off the Wi-Fi on all your wireless devices, wait a few seconds, and then turn your Wi-Fi back on.

“A power cycle might seem simplistic, but turning your home networking equipment off and on again can really give your network a boost,” the blog stated.

“We recommend rebooting your equipment regularly—at least once every few months,” it continued.

“But keep in mind that doing this will leave you without internet for a few minutes, so plan to restart your equipment at a time when no one needs an internet connection.”

ADDITIONAL TIP

It’s also important to update your router regularly so it runs smoothly and also has the latest security software uploaded.

Generally, you need to find out your router’s IP address and type that into a web browser to access an admin page.

Use your router’s username and password to log in and access the settings.
