I’m a Wi-Fi expert… get an instant internet speed boost from my little-known ’30cm rule’

SECURING a strong Wi-Fi connection can be a nightmare if you have a lot of electronic devices at home competing for signal.

Your TV, phone, speakers and even your smart fridge will all be vying for a slice of precious internet airwaves when they’re switched on.

And the devices closest to the Wi-Fi router will be sucking up the most signal.

That’s why a ’30cm rule’ is key to boosting internet speeds across all your devices, Aman Bhatti, Director of Propositions at Sky Broadband, told The Sun.

“For the best performing Wi-Fi try to keep your hub 30cm or more away from other electronics such as speakers, a cordless phone base station, TVs etc,” he said.

This way the router can push out an equal ripple of internet signal to all nearby devices.

The same rule can also be applied to any Wi-Fi boosters or extenders set up around the home.

The ’30cm rule’ is especially important around the holidays.

Bhatti added: “Large obstructions could negatively impact your Wi-Fi signal.

“This is something to particularly think about at Christmas time when the addition of festive décor such as your Christmas tree may act as an extra hurdle!”

Modern festive decorations, such as smart lights, can eat up internet signals.

Plus, when there’s more people around the house – there are typically more smartphones competing for internet signal.

But the Christmas tree itself, as well as any large objects – even if they’re not electronic – can act as a barrier to signals.

So, it’s important not to put your router within 30cm of tall or wide furniture for the sake of stronger internet speeds.
