A ONCE-thriving town is now a shadow of its former self – with boarded up homes costing a pittance.

A family sized three bedroom terraced home is now for sale in Peterlee, County Durham for just £5,000.

The cut price house was revealed by YouTube star Terry who grew up in the area.

Terry used the rock bottom guide price to illustrate just how far the area had fallen since the closure of Easington Colliery in May 1993.

The home is for sale on Avon Street , where parts of hit 2000 film Billy Elliot were filmed.

Terry said the area, which was once thriving, is now depressed with rows of boarded up homes and shops.

He said there were issues with anti-social behaviour in the former pit town too.

But Terry pointed out that there were still great people in the area, but that Peterlee needed urgent assistance to help revive the once proud community.

In his film clip posted on YouTube Terry vented his anger about the decline of the area where he grew up.

During the short clip he visited his former home, which was just around the corner.

He said: “There used to be a waiting list for homes around here.”

Terry argued that the pit was the heartbeat of the community that had “been ripped out.”

In the caption, Terry said: “£5,000 houses for sale in Horden Colliery; once a thriving place to live but since the pit closed and the government has let places like this go to pot and waste away which is a great shame as there are some beautiful areas and people.”

Locals posted comments below the video applauding Terry.

One said: “Me and the girlfriend went down for a walk recently, on the old colliery up the hill wheres there’s info stones on it’s history up to the old pit cage and down round the back.

“Really peaceful and nice. Nice to hear a bit more about the place as well and your history there.”

Another said: “Heartbreaking terry they might of destroyed the area but they could not break the spirit of the people in the community.”

A man who grew up in the area said: “I have just come back from living and working abroad, and it break my heart to see what a s**t hole Easington Colliery has become.

“So pleased I have fond memories of growing up in Easington. Will be giving back to the community when I start work at the local comprehensive we both went to in the 80’s. £5k is a months wages….strange times.”
