Cathcart called out an article which stated Meta could be introducing advertisements on WhatsApp to boost revenue.

In a post on X, formerly known as Twitter, the boss wrote: “This story is false.

“We aren’t doing this.

“Also it looks like you misspelled Brian’s name.”

The claims, which sparked fear among WhatsApp users, had been featured in a Financial Times article.

A spokesperson from WhatsApp previously told FT: “We can’t account for every conversation someone had in our company but we are not testing this, working on it and it’s not our plan at all.”

There were also suggestions the messaging app could start charging users a subscription fee to use a version without ads.

If adverts were to feature on the app, the report – which was blasted by Cathcart – claimed the interface would look similar to that of Facebook Messenger.
