Sales of men’s Y-fronts and boxers are soaring – while knickers hit the skids

SALES of underpants are soaring, a study has found — while knickers have hit the skids.

Analysts rummaged through Brits’ spending habits and found that among all men, sales of Y-fronts and boxers rose 40 per cent year-on-year.

Sales of knickers have fallen more sharply over the past 12 months

However knickers have dropped, with a 37 per cent fall according to MoneySuperMarket’s Household Money Index.

The UK underwear market is worth around £170million a year, with fellas owning an average of ten to 15 pairs of grundies, while women have up to 35 knickers.

Craig Earnshaw, 33, of Ely, Cambs, said he bought ten new pairs this summer for the first time in five years.

The legal worker added: “That should do me another five years.”

The study also found there was a 36 per cent rise in hair appointments, beauty salon visits were up 32 per cent, with a 33 per cent increase in champagne consumption.

Researchers said the average Brit spends 70 per cent of their income on monthly bills such as energy, mortgage or rent payments — just over £1,400.

That rises to 77 per cent for 18 to 34-year-olds — just under £1,800 a month.
