Daniel, 17, applied for a job at DMG Services Group after reading our exclusive pull-out crammed full of job vacancies on July 23.

He was given an interview days later and started work this month.

We are now calling on more young people to consider taking up a trade before going to university.

Daniel is earning up to £300 a week as he learns how to construct roofs.

From his company’s head office in Bellshill, North Lanarks, he said: “It’s great to think that more young people like me will be getting jobs after reading the pull-out.

“I’m learning so much already and finding it really interesting.”

Last year, we revealed how a study of 800 11–18-year-olds and their parents found getting paid while learning and experiencing working life appeals to some youngsters rather than university.

While 27 per cent feel unless the job they want specifically requires a degree, university is not a sensible route to go down.

And 31 per cent believe the rising cost of living means university is no longer such a good idea.

The pros of an apprenticeship, according to teens, are learning new skills (25 per cent), getting practical experience (21 per cent) and adding work experience to their CV (20 per cent).
