Nigel Farage has accused NatWest of kicking its review into the closure of his bank account ‘into the long grass’.

The banking sector is continuing to feel the fallout of the debanking scandal, which came to light when Coutts closed the former Ukip leader’s account without warning due to his political views. As a result, Dame Alison Rose quit as chief executive of NatWest, which owns Coutts, last month.

Farage has now accused NatWest of taking too long to investigate the debacle, as there is no deadline for internal probes. He claims rules were breached when Dame Alison shared details of his finances with a BBC journalist.

He said it had ‘fobbed me off’. Farage, who wants more information and to meet its interim boss, added: ‘The Establishment are clubbing together in an attempt to kick this as far into the long grass as they can. All of this now hinges on a report that could be many, many months away because no deadline has been set for it.’

NatWest said it was a ‘normal process’ for a response to ‘complex’ requests to take longer.

Banks are shutting more than 1,000 accounts every working day, The Mail on Sunday has revealed.

Almost 90,000 individuals are thought to have been labelled ‘politically exposed persons’ by banks, including MPs and other public figures who require extra checks.
