A systems failure at The Co-operative Bank left some customers unable to make or receive payments with their accounts this morning. 

The high street bank, that has around 3.1 million retail customers, took to its Twitter account on Thursday morning to explain the situation.

It also warned that customer account balances could appear out of date as a result of the tech glitch.

The Co-operative has said the problem has now been resolved and all outstanding payments are being processed.

Angry customers said their salaries hadn’t been paid into their accounts and they had been unable to pay bills owing to the issues.

In a statement it said: ‘All of our services are running as normal and customers are able to access their accounts and make payments. 

‘The issue affecting our payment processing system is now resolved and all scheduled payments are now being processed. Customers should see their account balances update in due course.

‘We apologise for the inconvenience this may have caused and want to reassure our customers that if they have suffered any financial detriment due to this issue, we will look to redress.’

Customers requiring redress as a result of the episode should contact the bank through the normal customer service channels. 

In addition to the payment system failure, Twitter users reported problems with the bank’s app leaving them unable to access their accounts.
