Twitter Support made the announcement on Friday, writing: “We’ll soon be implementing some changes in our effort to reduce spam in Direct Messages. Unverified accounts will have daily limits on the number of DMs they can send.”

A link was available for users to sign up for Twitter Blue, the monthly subscription service that adds a blue checkmark to users’ accounts and early access to select new features.

The announcement caused a divide between users with many praising or criticising the change.

“twitter limiting the amount of dms you send its really over for me,” wrote one person.

“1) this change is stupid 2) somehow muskrat is just gonna screw everyone, including Twitter blue users 3)they’re gonna say this is to prevent bots. it’s not gonna. it’s just gonna mean more bots are gonna be made to dm more people…” wrote another user, referring to Musk.

A third user wrote: “Changes like this is why other apps will start to compete, don’t limit your users on the basic stuff, this is not what Twitter is about. The point of paying for Twitter blue is so we have additional features not to take away a common, free feature and put a paywall behind it.”

However, many were in favor of the change.

“Finally, you can stop shilling your mixtapes. Whoever you are,” joked one person.

“Thank god,” wrote another person.

This comes after Musk revealed that the platform will be adding another new feature, following the launch of Mark Zuckerberg’s rival app, Threads.

Back in February, the Twitter app was testing a feature called Notes which drastically increases the user’s character limit.

The feature was now renamed to be called Articles on Tuesday.

“This will allow users to post very long, complex articles with mixed media,” Musk tweeted.

“You could publish a book if you want.”

Currently, Twitter Blue subscribers have the ability to write with 10,000 characters.

Non-subscribers are limited to 280 characters.
