Or a surprise party you want to keep under wraps.

Whatever your reason, there are some simple tricks to help you keep your WhatsApp messages private from friends and family.

Here’s how.

WhatsApp not only lets you lock WhatsApp itself but you can lock individual chats as well.

This means if someone tries to open a locked chat they’ll have to use Face ID or enter your passcode.

So, for this to work, the person will have to be unaware of your phone’s passcode of course.

You can setup a locked chat by opening the conversation you wish to protect and tap the person’s name at the top.

Look for Chat Lock.

And turn Lock This Chat with Face ID on.

It’ll then appear in a secret menu – pull down to reveal Locked Chats.

Archive chats

If Locked Chats look a bit too suspicious for you, you could try archiving the conversation.

This won’t lock it – but it’s a place many people don’t think to check.

To archive a chat, press and hold it.

Tap Archive from the menu.

Secret groups

If you’re arranging a surprise party, think carefully about how you title the group you’ve created.

Name it something they won’t suspect, like a boring work-related subject.
