BUMPER tins of biscuits are as much a part of Christmas as pulling crackers and chomping leftover-turkey sandwiches.
Nine in ten households treat themselves to a tin over the festive period. But how do you get the most bite for your buck?
Lynsey Hope tried out eight of this year’s top offerings.
Here she gives her verdict, rating each out of ten for value as well as taste.
Waitrose
Ultimate Chocolate Biscuit Selection, £5
- Ultimate Chocolate Biscuit Selection, £5 from waitrose.com – buy now
Contains: 26 biscuits (19.2p each)
Lynsey says: “These were virtually identical to the tin of biscuit’s from Sainsbury’s but more expensive and you get one fewer.
“I am rather partial to the chocolate-covered rounds — they tasted delicious. But I’ll be going to Sainsbury’s if I want more like them.
“At just over 19p a biscuit, these are rather overpriced.”
RATING: 3/10
M&S
Belgian Chocolate Biscuits Collection, £10
- Belgian Chocolate Biscuits Collection, £10 from Marks & Spencer stores – buy now
Contains: 120 biscuits (8.3p each)
Lynsey says: “Wow! There are a lot of yummy biscuits in this tin. I thought they were pricey at £10 but actually these are excellent value.
“There was great variety and they would last you throughout the festive season.
“They come in a lovely tin, too, if you want to give them as a gift.
“My pick of the bunch and I’d definitely buy them again.”
RATING: 10/10
McVitie’s Victoria
Classic Biscuit Collection, £3
- Classic Biscuit Collection, £3 from asda.com – buy now
Contains: 48 biscuits (6.25p each)
Lynsey says: “Just in terms of numbers, this tin gives you the most biscuits for your buck — just £3 for a lovely selection of short- bread, dark and milk chocolate biscuits.
“It doesn’t come with a fancy tin, though, so I’m not sure I would want to give them as a gift.
“But a lovely choice to have in the house for munching with a cuppa at this time of year.”
RATING: 8/10
Sainsbury’s
Milk, Dark & White Chocolate Biscuits, £3.50
- Milk, Dark & White Chocolate Biscuits, £3.50 from sainsburys.co.uk – buy now
Contains: 27 biscuits (13p each)
Lynsey says: “This tasty collection represents much better value than the almost identical tin you can get from Waitrose.
“I especially loved the chocolate rounds in this one.
“And at this price, I’ll certainly be going back for more.”
RATING: 8/10
McVitie’s Moments
Signature Selection of Christmas Biscuits, £10
- Signature Selection of Christmas Biscuits, £10 from ocado.com – buy now
Contains: 26 biscuits (38.5p each)
Lynsey says: “I felt these were hugely overpriced and they didn’t even come in a tin.
“While the contents were delicious, they were the most expensive per biscuit, as there just weren’t that many in the tin.
“You can get nearly 100 more biscuits from Marks & Spencer for your tenner.”
RATING: 1/10
Asda
Extra Special The Belgian Biscuit Selection, £5
- Extra Special The Belgian Biscuit Selection, £5 from asda.com – buy now
Contains: 43 biscuits (11.6p each)
Lynsey says: “This is a lovely assortment of biscuits to treat yourself and the family.
“But the tin is almost identical to the collection from Aldi.
“The big difference between them is that you get one fewer biscuit with this, while Asda’s effort actually costs you more money too.
“So purely on that basis, I can’t really recommend it.”
RATING: 3/10
Aldi
Specially Selected Belgian Chocolate Biscuits, £4.69
- Specially Selected Belgian Chocolate Biscuits, £4.69 from aldi.co.uk – buy now
Contains: 44 biscuits (10.7p each)
Lynsey says: “This selection makes for much better value than the very similar tin of biscuits from Asda.
“These felt superior to your bog-standard supermarket biscuit tin and actually looked quite upmarket when I put them out on a platter.
“They were good quality and I was pretty impressed with them.”
RATING: 9/10
Cadbury
Oreo Biscuit Selection, £4
- Oreo Biscuit Selection, £4 from tesco.com – buy now
Contains: 39 biscuits (10.3p each)
Lynsey says: “My son Jacob, who is six years old, is an Oreo fan and his eyes lit up when he saw this box.
“Inside you will find classic Oreos, Golden Oreos and Cadbury Fingers, chocolate chip cookies and double chocolate chip cookies.
“Most of them are quite sweet and not really to my taste but the kids loved them. At £4, reasonable value too.”
RATING: 7/10
