Struggling to get enough sleep is a problem faced by many.

And it may be contributing to bickering in your relationship — as women manage to get an extra hour per night, a survey of 2,000 Brits suggests.

The average woman in the UK sleeps for around eight hours each night, while men typically only catch around seven.

Six in ten couples said this sleep imbalance has caused ‘tensions’ in their relationship.

More than half have slept separately to get some extra shut-eye and one in ten have taken to using separate bedrooms, the results revealed.

The poll, by CBD brand Naturecan on the nation’s sleeping habits, suggests that while 60 per cent of women tend to go to bed earlier than their partner, 66 per cent of men wake up earlier in the morning as they needed less sleep.

The NHS recommends getting seven to nine hours of sleep per night but warns that that one third of Brits will struggle at some point with insomnia. 

Brits reported that the biggest sleep disrupter was the heat, with 64 per cent of men and 62 per cent of women struggling to get enough shut eye during hot weather.

Light, stress, noise, snoring, bathroom breaks and pets were among the other factors that most frequently interrupted sleep. 

But the results suggest that sex could aide those struggling to nod off, as 76 per cent of women and 82 per cent of men said they sleep better after intimacy.

A Naturecan spokesman said: ‘We all know how crucial good sleep is to our overall wellbeing.

‘These results show that we are sleeping less, particularly during these hot summer months, and many couples have completely different sleep patterns.

‘Sleep imbalances can cause big problems in a relationship because intimacy inevitably suffers when we are not in bed together.’

However, experts have suggested that it is right for women to get more sleep than men — because women multitask and use their brain more than men.

‘Because of that, their sleep need is greater,’ said Professor Jim Horne, emeritus professor of psychophysiology at Loughborough University.
