Adam Yates, riding for Tadej Pogacar’s UAE Emirates team, took the first yellow jersey of the 2023 Tour de France, after breaking clear with his twin brother, Simon, of the Jayco AlUla team, on the opening stage of the three-week race, a hilly 182km circuit based on Bilbao.

“My brother came across with me and we went together,” Adam said. “At first I didn’t know if I should work with him, but I asked on the (team) radio and they said ‘Go for it.’”
