LSE jumped 9.6 per cent amid reports it is set to win approval for its takeover of Refinitiv

Shares in the London Stock Exchange jumped 9.6 per cent amid reports it is set to win approval for its £20billion takeover of data analytics company Refinitiv.

It would make LSE a major distributor and creator of market data at a time when observers think it is becoming as important to finance as oil is to industry.

This week S&P Global agreed to buy London financial analytics firm IHS Markit for £33billion, creating a challenger to Refinitiv and Bloomberg.

To appease EU regulators poring over the proposed takeover of Refinitiv, LSE has agreed to sell its Italian operations Borsa Italiana to Euronext.

Competition regulators in Europe are ready to give the deal the green light. LSE shares rose 764p to 8754p, valuing it at £30billion.

The European Commission, scheduled to decide on the deal by January 21, declined to comment.

LSE and Refinitiv also declined to comment.
