So the folder that syncs stuff for you will cease to function.

It’ll affect computers running Windows 8/8.1.

On top of this, Windows Server 2012 machines and all 32-bit versions of Windows are out too.

The move is little surprise given that Microsoft gave up on Windows 8/8.1 ages ago.

Windows 8.1 has a tiny market share of only 0.72 per cent worldwide now, according to Stat Counter.

And Windows 8 is even lower at 0.37 per cent.

Nevertheless, Google is warning all existing users that the only way they can continue accessing Drive from their machine is by upgrading to Windows 10.

“In August 2023, we’re ending support for Drive for desktop on Windows 8/8.1, Windows Server 2012, and all 32-bit versions of Windows,” the firm said.

“To avoid service interruption, Windows users should upgrade to Windows 10 (64 bit) or higher before August 2023.

“Users of a 32-bit version of Windows can still access Drive through a browser.”

Google has already killed off Chrome support for Windows 8.1.

The company also stopped supporting popular predecessor Windows 7.
