Suitcases and bin bags full of simple possessions strewn across a central London street have become a powerful symbol of the government’s ramping up of the hostile environment against people seeking safety in Britain.

Up to 40 people who had escaped war and atrocities in countries including Eritrea, Somalia, Iran and Iraq took to the streets last week after being given a hotel sleeping area of just 2 sq metres: four in a room with two bunk beds.
