Five car parks in a cathedral city will accept payment only by mobile app – to the fury of campaigners and older motorists.

In the latest example of the trend towards ‘parking meter deserts’, which has been highlighted by the Mail, 359 spaces in Worcester will no longer take cash or cards.

From next month, shoppers and visitors will need to download the RingGo app to pay by mobile – or call a phone operator.

The city’s council says it is reacting to changing demand after a ‘steep’ decline in cash payments.

And it claims the move covers barely one in six of the parking spaces it operates across Worcester.

Age UK said it was ‘hearing from more and more people’ in Worcestershire about app-only parking issues.
