CHANCES are your iPhone is the most expensive and valuable object you carry around with you everyday.
So it’s only right that you want to make sure it lasts as long as possible.
But you could be making some basic mistakes that edge your iPhone closer to death than it needs to be.
Too much water
Modern iPhones can handle more than the odd splash these days.
In fact, your handset can survive being plunged under water too.
But only for a certain amount of time – and it depends on how deep as well.
Every phone has something called an IP rating which is a test to see how long it’ll last when faced with liquid and other foreign objects such as dust.
iPhone 12, 13 and 14 for example are IP68, which means they can handle a depth of six metres for up to 30 minutes.
So don’t push your iPhone beyond its IP rating limit.
Low quality iPhone chargers
It’s tempting to get a cheap iPhone charger to save some money.

But it’s not the best idea if you want your handset to last longer.
The occasional charge from one probably won’t do much harm.
But overtime, using a low quality charger could damage the port or battery because of voltage fluctuations.
Using a cheap case
Cases are designed to protect your iPhone from drops.
You may see a case you like but if it’s cheap plastic it may not do the main job it’s supposed to.
Make sure the case you go for at least feels solid so you have a better chance of it surviving next time it falls.
Jailbreaking Your iPhone
Meddling under the bonnet of your iPhone is not for the fainthearted.
Jailbreaking to add software unapproved by Apple onto your handset is hugely risky, especially for those who aren’t experienced.
If it goes wrong, you may not be able to restore your iPhone to how it was before.
And warranty, support and even insurance is void, so you won’t be able to get help or claim a new one.
