XBOX has announced that it is looking into more ways to monetise its games.

Of the big three – Xbox, PlayStation, and Nintendo – Xbox is often seen as the budget choice for gamers.

Not only is the Xbox Series S a budget console that will play the same games as the powerful Series X, but Game Pass gives players good value for money.

However, fans are now worried that Xbox will be taking things one step too far.

The company is apparently investigating putting advertising into games, much like how free-to-play mobile games work.

In an interview with Rolling Stone, Microsoft’s corporate vice president Sarah Bond talked about how the company was considering putting adverts in their games.

She says: “We’ve talked about how we’re experimenting with other models, like what does it mean for advertising in games which is more prevalent in mobile.

“Are there models of that, [which would] work well in PC and console?”

Fans were disappointed by the news though it’s not completely unexpected.

Other companies like Netflix are exploring cheaper tiers of subscription for those who watch movies and TV shows with ads.

On the bright side, there is also another model of gaming that Xbox is looking at, which could be exciting for players.

Much like how Steam has started 90-minute trials of Dead Space, Xbox could follow suit.

Bond continues: “Are there other models where you might have timed slices of games and stuff like that?

“Providing creators with options and choice enables them to experiment and do what they like, and actually create more immersive and creative experiences without having to fit into a mould.”

Of course, it all depends on how Xbox plans to add these two systems to its existing subscriptions.

If there is a new ad-based subscription to Game Pass at a significantly cheaper price, then it could be successful.

However, if there is a plan to add advertising to full-priced games, there will certainly be some pushback.
