We’re spending more time than ever on devices, so phone owners are a prime target for cyber-criminals.

In an official memo, Ofcom warned iPhone and Android owners over scams where crooks pretend to be from an official organisation to trick you.

“Sometimes we receive phone calls, messages and emails from scammers,” Ofcom explained.

“These are criminal acts, usually aimed at encouraging you to hand over money, or your personal or financial information.”

Cybercriminals are increasingly sophisticated, and can seem very convincing.

They often use “urgent” language to get you to rush into making a decision.

And they’ll pose as legitimate businesses that give you a false sense of security.

“It can be hard to tell if a spam text, email or call is from a legitimate company or a scammer,” Ofcom warned.

“For example, scammers could pretend to be from your bank or building society, or they might claim to be from your phone or broadband company.

“Other examples include criminals claiming to represent HM Revenue and Customs, the NHS, delivery companies, or even Ofcom.”

How to stay safe from scams

Ofcom explains how to stay safe from scam calls and texts.

If you receive a suspicious text, Ofcom said: “Stop! The text could be a scam. Read carefully and look for any details that don’t seem right.

“Don’t click on any links or give out any personal or bank details.”

And if you get a suspicious phone call: “Do not give out any personal or bank details.

“Hang up and call the company they claim to be from to check if it is a scam.”

Ofcom advises phone owners in the UK to report scam texts or mobile calls to 7726.
