Many people are being left shocked at realising that pressing this button will only turn your TV from on to standby.

Cracked.com posted a mind-blowing explanation on Facebook of symbols you never notice in everyday life – and their true meanings.

They wrote: “Ever wonder what those symbols on power switches and buttons mean? (Don’t be embarrassed, many people do!)”

The American “humour site” revealed that the circular design with the vertical line cutting through the top is actually based on the binary number system.

The “I” represents “1” or “on”, and the “O” represents a zero or “off”.

But they then highlight that by pressing this button on your TV remote, the device is only placed “between full “on” or “standby” (Not fully “OFF!”) with each press”.

People were left amazed at the post as it racked up over 400 likes and 100 shares, and many left their shocked reactions in the comments.

This comes after people have just discovered an essential TV trick that every iPhone and Android owner must know.

Smart TV functions vary widely but one thing most can do is cast photos.

Casting allows you to beam images from your iPhone or Android device in real-time.

Drivers were also left stunned after only just realising how to use the grab handles in their cars properly.

The catch on the handles actually ensures that the grab handle stays in place, making it easier to hang things up when you have your hands full.

People are also only just learning what the word turquoise means and it’s blowing their minds.

Taking to Twitter, Professor Alice Roberts said: “All these years… I had not realised that turquoise meant ‘Turkish‘!”

And if you fancy some free M&S food – people are only just discovering that the posh supermarket’s loyalty card scheme rewards members with free treats.

From free croissants and cookies to free Percy Pigs, shoppers have only just twigged the value of their M&S Sparks card.

Posting on the Extreme Couponing and Bargains UK Facebook group one happy shopper said: “Free bag of Colin the Caterpillar OR Percy Pig sweets if you have the M&S sparks card.”
