HOUSEHOLDS have been warned that the position of their Wi-Fi router can seriously affect your internet connection.

It may be tempting to lay your box down.

Especially if you want to squeeze it into a specific space.

Some will even try facing it so the lights are in the opposite direction and out of view.

But Virgin Media O2 has urged users not to do it.

“If you’re trying to tuck your router into a specific space, such as under a TV unit, you might be tempted to turn it on its side,” the firm explained.

“Our advice? Don’t.

“Keep your router upright with the front lights facing into the room to ensure more of the signal goes outwards into that room, rather than into the floor.”

So if yours is in the wrong position you might want to adjust it now to see if it improves your connection.

In fact, the position and placement of your router can have all sorts of connection benefits.

For example, it’s no good keeping it in a cupboard as this will block the signal from spreading out.

Equally, places like a windowsill are not a good idea either as Wi-Fi will just be sent outside and wasted.

There are also objects around the house that can have a big influence on your connection too.

Microwaves, cordless phones and even fish tanks have an impact.
