PAPER CUPS OR PLATES: Younger children can use these for crafty activities, so donate to a local school, nursery or community centre if you don’t have tots yourself.

Paper cups also make brilliant starter pots for seeds and young plants.

Just make some holes in the bottom, fill with compost and put on a plate to catch any water drips.

NAPKINS: Separate the different layers of napkins and use them for stunning decorating projects.

You stick thin papers on to a wooden surface and then cover with a special glue. The Works sells Décopatch paperpatch varnish glue for £5.50.

You can rip the napkin into shreds and mix with other paper scraps or use a Union Jack to make a stunning design.

Get inspired by ideas at etsy.com and search for “Union Jack decoupage”.

BUNTING: Red, white and blue flags can be used to brighten up kids’ rooms and look great against neutral colours.

Handy with a needle? Incorporate fabric bunting into new projects, such as decorating a tote bag or a cushion cover.

Plastic bunting could get a second life as a bird scarer over a veg patch.

FOOD: If it’s been a big BBQ weekend, freeze leftovers for future meals.

Sausages can be chopped into pasta sauces, chicken transformed into a stir fry, and burgers can work as meatballs.

RECYCLE: Take a look at the items you have left from your party and see if they can be reused or recycled.

Union Jack cups and plates can be used at any bash.

As for bunting, it won’t be long until we find another excuse to fly the flag. Eurovision, anyone?
