The viral phenomenon is in fact a way of letting followers know that you are single.

Conceived by the dating concept known as Pear, it asks singletons to purchase a set of simple green rings to wear for £19.99.

Since its launch in the UK, US, Germany, Canada and Australia, the idea has captured the public’s imagination – with thousands splashing the cash to showcase their singlehood.

Pear has lofty goals – hoping to leapfrog mainstream dating apps and establish itself as the arbiter of bringing single people together.

“Millions of singles will be wearing this ring.

“Hinge. Bumble. Tinder. Pear will take it from here”, it promises.

The ring can be worn on any finger and is a discreet indication to others that you’re single.

The payment also provides free access to events for single people, as well as ‘PearFest’, reportedly the world’s biggest festival for singles.

Pear has also encouraged users to add a pear emoji to their social media bios to indicate they’re ready to mingle.

Many took to Twitter to react to the viral sensation.

One said: “Added the pear emoji to my insta bio.”

Another weighed in: “If you’re single it is time to put a pear emoji in your Instagram profile!”

It comes after Apple released a selection of new emojis.

Happily, The Sun Online have published a comprehensive explainer of what each emoji means and which ones you should be keen to avoid.
