A MAJOR supermarket is to shut more stores within weeks following a string of closures.

Iceland has already shut the doors on more than half a dozen shops, with more closures on the way.

Several stores closed for good earlier this year, including branches in Bromsgrove, Basingstoke and Rhyl.

Plus, a further three stores in Newport, Berwick and Hexham closed on Saturday (April 22).

It comes as a number of big retailers look to close branches as they struggle with high energy costs and soaring inflation.

Iceland has now confirmed it will be closing two more stores this year.

Shoppers in Flint, Wales, will lose their store on May 27.

And the branch in Beccles, Suffolk, will shut for good on June 17.

This will bring the total number of Iceland closures this year to 11.

While Iceland has closed a handful of stores this year, the supermarket says it has opened around 200 stores over the last 10 years.

It opened 24 new stores during the last financial year.

Across Iceland and The Food Warehouse, it currently has over UK 1,000 stores.

In a statement, Iceland said: “We continually review the retail experience offered to our customers and have always made a small number of store closures every year, as local shopping patterns change and shop leases expire.

“The business is currently trading very strongly, achieving record market shares.”

A number of British high street brands have closed stores in recent months.

How can I save at Iceland?

There are plenty of deals and loyalty offers not to be missed at Iceland.

For example, there’s the Bonus Card Loyalty Scheme – it grants access to exclusive offers and lets you plan a budget by saving up cash in your account.

Launched in 2021, it’s free to sign up for online and you’ll just need to provide a few quick details.

With it, you can get the following special benefits:

  • £1 bonus each time you add £20 to your savings balance
  • Exclusive Bonus Card prices
  • Free home delivery in stores and online
  • Prizes and offers

It’s a similar thing to other loyalty schemes like Asda rewards and Tesco Clubcard.

It’s good to always shop around regardless of the offers you see though, because you never know what you’re missing elsewhere.

Use comparison tools like Trolley.co.uk to browse the price of an item from other supermarkets so you know you’re getting the best deal.
