But at Morrison’s knock-down price, drinkers could swig the 14-unit weekly recommended intake for a mere £3.85.

It is £1 a can in Scotland and Wales which have minimum 50p per alcohol unit price laws.

Dr Richard Piper, of Alcohol Change UK, wants the same rules in England.

He said: “It ensures the strongest drinks are not sold at pocket-money prices.”

Sue Taylor, for Balance, the North East Alcohol Programme, added: “It is a scandal that people can drink a week of alcohol for less than a fiver.”

“Cheap strong alcohol makes it easy for people to drink at harmful levels on a daily basis and for children to buy alcohol.”

Morrisons declined to comment.
