IPHONE owners have been warned about lasers in their devices that may cause injury to their eyes or skin.

You may not know this, but our iPhones come equipped with complex laser systems.

This includes sensory lasers, which are installed in iPhone 7 and later, the TrueDepth camera system, and LiDAR.

If you have an iPhone that’s from the Pro range of the iPhone 12 or above or even an iPad Pro, then you’ll have a LiDAR scanner.

LiDAR, which stands for “Light Detection And Ranging,” is the small black dot on the bottom right of the camera panel.

WHAT DOES LiDAR DO?

LiDAR lasers are needed to help measure the distance and depth of objects.

They also help data that our iPhone collects to auto-focus more quickly and accurately.

In fact, Apple says that iPhones with LiDAR can focus up to six times faster than phones without – even in low-light conditions.

THE DANGERS OF LASERS

However, like with most technological advances, things can go wrong.

In the event that your iPhone’s lasers are not working properly, your device will disable it for safety reasons.

This is meant to prevent the laser from malfunctioning further.

Your device will also administer a notification saying that the laser system is disabled.

If you see this alert, you should contact Apple or an Apple Authorized Service Provider for service.

Apple warned users to neither try to fix the laser themselves nor take it somewhere that’s not credible.

“Improper repair, modification, or use of non-genuine Apple components in the laser systems may prevent the safety mechanisms from functioning properly and could cause hazardous exposure and injury to eyes or skin,” Apple stated on its website.

Thankfully, this isn’t a common occurrence and most iPhone users never see their lasers disabled.
