It’s late, you’re struggling with your keys at the front door, and the porch light is on the blink again… if only there was help at hand.

Well, for iPhone users there is potentially a solution. A little-known feature hidden away among the many settings on the Apple device.

A quick double-tap with your finger of the back of the phone, and viola! On goes the torch. Now you can find the keyhole.

Back-tap: Did you know you can turn on your torch by tapping the back of your phone twice?

The Back Tap feature enables the device to perform a whole series of tasks that would otherwise be activitated by pressing on the homescreen or similar.

Camera, screen rotation lock, mute, screenshot, Siri, volume controls and the torch are among the 16 functions that can be performed by tapping the back of the phone either twice or three times.

Users can select two functions, one performed with a double tap, another with a triple-tap.

But, before you get too excited about this life-saving new tip that could just prove the ultimate party trick… it may be simple to switch on, but it’s far from easy to use.

You can lead a horse to water, as they say. 

As MailOnline staff discovered, switching the setting on was perfectly straightforward, but double-tapping to turn on the torch proved anything but.

If you want to turn on the setting, follow these simple steps. But beware, an afternoon of furious finger-tapping may follow:

  1. Go to the phone’s home screen
  2. Head over to settings 
  3. Click accessibility
  4. Click Touch
  5. Scroll to Back Tap
  6. Select the functions for Double Tap or Triple Tap – the options include:
  • Open an app
  • Lock screen
  • Screenshot
  • Mute
  • Activate Siri
  • Adjusting the volume
  • Open camera
  • Turn on the torch
  • Adjust screen’s zoom
