Ed Stack is stepping down as chief executive of Dick’s Sporting Goods Inc. after decades at the helm of the sporting-goods company he built into a national chain and led into the debate over gun violence.

Mr. Stack, 65, Dick’s biggest shareholder, will stay on as chairman and chief merchant, a role he held in addition to CEO, a spokeswoman said. Lauren Hobart, president at the retailer, will become chief executive on Feb. 1, the spokeswoman said. Ms. Hobart joined the company in 2011 as chief marketing officer.
