JP Morgan has admitted Jes Staley had ‘inappropriate’ personal conversations with Jeffrey Epstein over his work email.
In court documents filed in New York, the Wall Street giant said the former boss of its private bank used his work email to engage with the paedophile financier.
But it added the emails failed to show minors were victimised or that ‘force, fraud or coercion’ were used against women.

The court filings come just a week after the US Virgin Islands (USVI) unsealed email exchanges alleging Staley – who became the boss of Barclays after leaving JP Morgan – drank white wine in a hot tub on Epstein’s private Caribbean island while Epstein was still in prison for child sex offences.
In November 2009, Staley wrote: ‘Presently, I’m in the hot tub with a glass of white wine. This is an amazing place. I owe you much. And I deeply appreciate our friendship. I have few so profound.’
Between 2008 and 2012, Staley exchanged around 1,200 emails with Epstein from his JP Morgan account, with the pair also holding conversations about ‘Disney princesses’ who Epstein was trying to pursue.
Staley became boss of Barclays in 2015. He was ousted six years later after a regulatory investigation into how he characterised past ties to his former client.
In JP Morgan’s filing, in which it asked a judge to dismiss USVI’s lawsuit, the bank said the emails do not prove that any illegal conduct took place on the bank’s part.
Staley has repeatedly denied knowledge of Epstein’s sexual abuse. His lawyer declined to comment.
