Ford is axing more than 1,000 jobs in the UK in a bid to cut costs and speed up its switch to electric vehicles.

The American carmaker is shifting to a ‘smaller, more focused’ range of electric cars in Europe – and cutting 3,800 jobs across the continent. Of these, 1,300 will be in the UK, mostly from its research site in Dunton, Essex.

Of the 1,300 jobs going, 1,000 will be high-paying roles in design, engineering, research and development. The other 300, also mainly at Dunton, will be administrative jobs, some from an office in Stratford.

Local MP John Baron said it was ‘disappointing’ that Ford was reducing staff at Dunton.

He added: ‘I know it will be a worrying time for my constituents who are employed there.’

Ford is planning for all of its European-made cars to be fully electric by 2030. It will launch three electric cars and four commercial vehicles in Europe by 2024.
