Outgoing prime minister given rapturous welcome at political gathering as she dismisses claims that abuse and threats contributed to her departure

Jacinda Ardern, New Zealand’s outgoing prime minister, said leading the country was “the greatest privilege of my life” in her last public appearance before she leaves the role on Wednesday, less than a week after she unexpectedly quit.

“I leave with a greater love and affection for Aotearoa New Zealand and its people than when I started,” Arden said. “I didn’t think that was possible.”
