Gardener Allan Jeffrey shared his top tips for your outdoor space this winter

We spoke to Allan Jeffrey, of the garden company Ultra Decking, about how to save money when sprucing up your garden.

The 62-year-old, who has been in the gardening industry – from engineering to sales and production – for around 25 years, has some valuable advice when it comes to transforming your garden and boosting the value of your home this winter.

“Outdoor space is one of the most important things that prospective homeowners consider, so making sure your garden is looking its best will boost your home’s appeal,” Allan said.

From adding a pop of colour to using leftover materials, we asked Allan for his top tips when it comes to making added improvements to our outdoor areas, that won’t break the bank.

Do major gardening work in the winter

If you are looking at adding decking, or fencing, or doing any other building projects like this, doing it in the winter will save you quite a bit of money.

Allan said: “That is because you will have more opportunity to negotiate or get a good deal as it’s a much quieter time of year for tradespeople.

“You should also be able to save money on materials, as it’s likely it will be on sale and finally you will be able to find a good fitter, as they won’t be as busy during the winter months.”

When doing any gardening work, take the time to measure everything carefully and correctly.

It’s common for this process to be rushed, then work has to be stopped, which incurs more costs and redelivery of materials.

We previously explained cheap ways to transform your garden and add thousands to its value.

Add colour to your garden to make it more attractive

“This may sound obvious but many house owners don’t have the time to look after their garden so keep it sparse, Allan said.

“Adding colour can be done with limited budgets simply with colourful plants and garden furniture.”

Hit the sales!

At this time of year, garden materials and products are more likely to be on sale and installers will be less busy.

Allan said: “That’s why it could be the best time to replace your old wooden deck or paving tiles as you’re more likely to find or negotiate a better deal.”

He added: “Spend time looking online where there are great deals to be had, as well as garden centres and hardware shops.”
