Russian president’s new year message comes as Moscow launches fresh wave of rocket attacks on Ukraine

Vladimir Putin said his country is fighting in Ukraine to protect its “motherland”, and to secure “true independence” in his new year video message, as Russia unleashed its second major wave of rocket attacks on the country in three days.

Ukrainian officials said explosions were reported throughout the country on New Year’s Eve.
